Straw represents the largest residual stream within the grain chain and is mainly left in field today or used for feed and bedding. It is of high interest to look more into straw for biogas production, but the biodegradability needs to be increased by a pre‐treatment process.
The production of 2nd generation bioethanol from cereal straw is also a very interesting utilization of straw to look more into if the lignin fraction and the C5 fraction can be valorized as well. Bio‐oil and bio‐char are examples of products that can be produced from these two fractions. One interesting possibility is to build a bio‐char production facility at the grain mill. It is also interesting to look more into straw and husks as components in the manufacturing of panels, insulation and filler solid in building materials.
