The Association of Renewable Energy Companies (APPA) and Biomass Union (Spain), to which Spanish Agri-food Cooperatives belongs, organized last Thursday 14th of June a conference entitled “Advances in Biomass in Spain”, highlighting the important role played by biomass as an energy source, as part of the GENERA 2018 fair.
Pablo Fernández, from the Department of Services, Quality and Innovation, presented the sector reports prepared by Spanish Agri-food Cooperatives for the AGROinLOG Project in Spain. This project pursues the implementation of Integrated Biomass Logistics Centres (IBLC’s) in agro-industries, taking advantage of the synergies existing in these for the processing of residual biomass of agricultural origin both for the production of bioenergy and for obtaining bioproducts.
Specifically, the reports presented assessed the potential for the implementation of IBLC’s in the wine, olive oil, feed and fodder and vegetable oil sectors.
As a success story of the use of biomass, Alejandro Velasco from the Agropal cooperative explained the use they make of straw pellets for their own consumption in their Quesos Cerrato factory, as well as in other facilities. This is a clear example of a circular economy in which they use agricultural waste and provide services to their members. As he highlighted, they expect to cover 80% of the thermal energy needed in the biomass cheese factory in the coming years.
